Several voices in one picture
Mixed media unites paint with pencil, paper, ink or texture paste in a single work. Mixed-media paintings for sale offer surfaces where several materials work with one another.
A mixed technique may begin with pencil, lay acrylic over it, glue in paper and add oil pastel accents. Each material has its own texture; they complement or rub against each other. This gives the picture a layering rarely seen in pure oil painting.

Notes for buying
Ask about adhesion, support and varnish, because not every combination ages stably. Graphite and pastel often need fixative or glass. Plan on a frame with glass whenever unprotected drawing media are involved.
