Chorus of materials
Mixed media gives gestural painting many voices: pencil scribbles, acrylic covers, paper wrinkles, oil gleams. If you like many layers, expressive mixed-media paintings for sale are a good place to look.
Every substance has its tempo. Pencil flies over the surface, acrylic covers parts again, a sheet of paper is pressed in. The gestural handwriting arises from the friction between materials.

Picture with attitude
Such works are most effective when they get room. A bright hallway, a room with plenty of wall: they need air and light so their gestures do not merge into a carpet.
What to ask
Because different materials are differently delicate, the description should name protective measures: glass, varnish, mat. Also ask whether paper parts might come loose and how to store the picture if you ever take it down. And because each layer ages differently, a note on storage and care in the description is a good sign.
