Matte, dense, water-soluble
Gouache is the paint for anyone who likes rich planes on paper without any gloss. Gouache paintings for sale show velvety matte colors that stand dense yet stay light.
Gouache consists of pigment, gum arabic and a filler that makes it opaque. That is why light can go over dark, which watercolor cannot do. Even when dry it remains water-soluble, so areas can be softened afterwards.

Style and ambition
The medium runs from finely worked classicism to the delicate detail that Classical and Photorealism demand. Flat poster-style fields, illustrations and landscape studies also like gouache, because it is strong in color yet easy to handle.
Before you buy
Paper and framing count: ask about weight, mat and glass. Gouache tolerates no splashed water, so do not hang it in a bathroom. A first orientation comes from under 500 euro; comparable work on the medium sits under Material Gouache.
