Four hands in one picture
In an abstract picture, mixed media means several materials in a single work, such as acrylic, pencil, oil and charcoal. Anyone who wants abstract mixed-media paintings for sale should pay attention to how the materials work together, and to more than the color.
A layer of acrylic forms the ground, pencil runs across it, charcoal shows through from below, and at the edge someone sets a last accent in oil paint. The eye reads these traces like gestures at different speeds, some hasty, some considered.

A picture with many distances
From afar the composition counts, up close the material does. Think about where you walk past every day: a mixed-media picture in a hallway shows a different detail every time and so never gets boring.
Before buying
The description should list all materials. Because drawn passages can be delicate, glass or a protective varnish helps. Ask what is recommended and whether acrylic forms the top layer.
