Layers and contrasts
Mixed media arises when a picture needs more than one material: acrylic, charcoal, paper scraps, oil pastel, or ink work together on one surface. Mixed-media paintings for sale in the 500 to 1,000 euro range are best judged by their layers and durability.
Mixed media combines what seems to contradict at first glance: matte charcoal next to glossy acrylic, glued paper beneath paint, lines incised into gesso. Each material shows differently how light settles on it. The surface comes alive and almost tangible.

Alive on the wall
Because different materials reflect light differently, the picture changes with the time of day. Hang it on a wall beside a window and sheen and shadow travel across the surface. Plain strip frames suit it, leaving room for the depth.
Check the composition
The description should say what the picture is made of, for example acrylic, pencil, or collage. Charcoal and pastel can rub off, so a fixative or glass often makes sense. Ask about the type of support and the build.
