Traces that mean something
Mixed media gives symbolist painting a second level of paper, acrylic and drawing: meaning lies here in the motif and also in the stuff. Here you can find symbolist mixed-media paintings for sale that interlace found material and color.
A strip of paper, a remnant of writing, an area in acrylic: anything can be a sign. The painter lays layers over each other so meanings overlap. The eye looks for connections without finding a final one.

Quiet presence
Symbolist mixed-media works are often small to medium-sized. They fit beside windows, in niches or at desks. Soft light brings out the textures, glaring light flattens them.
Protection and authenticity
Paper parts age differently from paint. Ask about glass, varnish or mat, and whether the papers are acid-free. Certificate, signature and year help identify the work later. Do not hang the work in damp rooms either, so the paper layers do not come loose.
