Material as part of the composition
Sand, ink, torn paper, chalk and paint can all meet in one abstract picture, and that mix creates the surface that pulls you closer. For abstract mixed-media paintings for sale between 2,000 and 5,000 euro, it pays to compare what actually moves under the light.
In mixed media nothing is incidental. A rough patch of sand next to smooth ink produces a contrast that paint alone never gives. Abstract work uses this to build depth without showing any object: layer, crack and edge do the telling. A fingernail would feel it at once: some zones are smooth as lacquer, others grainy and dull.

Light decides the relief
Pictures with strong relief change over the course of a day. Morning light from the side traces every edge, while spotlights from above drop shadows into the valleys. Pick a spot where the light is allowed to vary.
Settle this before you buy
Ask which materials were used and how they are bound and protected. With heavy or loosely attached elements, weight and hanging matter, and a floater frame or glass can offer protection.
