Material as part of the idea
A painting without a subject can be made from acrylic, oil, ink, paper or rust, and that very openness makes abstraction exciting. Here you can find abstract paintings for sale where the choice of material shapes the picture.
Where no motif leads, matter moves forward: grain, gloss, oxidation, paper fiber. Some painters let rust work on the picture, others scrape, sand and overpaint until a layered skin appears that never looks quite the same twice.

How such pictures stand in a room
The rougher the surface, the more raking light matters. A relief painting looks completely different in the evening with a lamp at the side than at noon. That is worth considering when you hang it, as is a background that does not compete with the texture.
What to check
With mixed materials, description and photos should clarify whether the surface is sealed and how to care for it. Works on paper also need glass and some space from the back wall.
