A material with shimmer
Graphite is carbon in layers, which is exactly why it draws so softly and gleams so finely. You can buy graphite drawings for sale here, whether as a photorealistic work, as a sketch or at the level under 500 euro.
Graphite is more than the stuff inside a pencil. As stick, bar, powder or water-soluble block it lies on the paper now as a fine line, now as a velvety area. Its silvery gloss changes with the light and makes blacks seem alive. The paper plays along: smooth stock lets graphite gleam and allows fine gradients, while rough stock takes up more material and looks darker, stronger and grainier.
