Color like velvet
Pastel is nearly pure pigment in stick form, which is why the colors glow on paper without the varnish that oil needs. Drawings in pastel for sale are found under pastel and in styles such as impressionism, surrealism or cubism.
Soft pastel sticks consist mostly of pigment with only a little binder. That makes them intense but also fragile. A finger pulls tones into each other, the edge of the stick makes narrow lines. Rough or coated paper holds the layers, smooth paper would let them slide off.

Hanging pastel safely
Pastel pictures belong behind glass, with a mat as spacer, and out of direct sunlight. A light fixative can secure some layers but darkens certain colors. Read the listing for how the work is protected. In price, pastels range from under 500 euro up to 1,000 to 2,000 euro.
Paper makes the difference
Pastel paper has a tooth that holds the chalk. Velvet paper, sanded paper and laid paper each act differently: one soaks color deep in, another carries it visibly on top. Listings that name the paper help you judge.
