Black with depth
Charcoal is the oldest drawing material in the world: burnt willow or vine twig that lays deep black on paper. You can buy charcoal drawings for sale here, whether photorealistic, abstract or expressive and gestural.
Charcoal does not reflect light, it swallows it. The black looks velvety and alive because the pigment forms tiny grains that cling to the paper. Rubbed with a finger it makes soft fog, drawn with an edge it makes hard lines, lifted with an eraser it makes light traces.

Strong presence
Charcoal pictures bring weight into a room even in small formats. They suit white walls as well as brick or plaster. A frame of wood or metal and a white mat give the black air.
Mind the dust
Charcoal clings only loosely. The frame should be built behind glass with a spacer. Unframed sheets are best stored flat between tissue paper.
