Judging without a label
Not every painting fits into a drawer, and some pictures gain precisely by refusing to follow one style. Paintings with no fixed style label for sale in the 2,000 to 5,000 euro range are best judged by effect, craft and the feeling you get in front of the original.
With no style prescribed, what counts is what you feel in front of the picture. Does the color work? Does the surface have tension? Does the stroke look sure? Ask these three questions and you reach a clear impression quickly, even with unclassified work.

Technique as a clue
The support tells you more than a term. Oil on canvas stands for depth and patience, oil paint as a whole for warm tones and slow work. Both roads lead to pictures you can look at for a long time.
The room decides
A painting without a fixed category can hang anywhere it holds its own against the surroundings. Choose wall and light so the picture can breathe, and hang it at eye level. Try out at home how the picture looks in morning light and under a lamp before you finally decide.
