Light as the real subject

Impressionist painting breaks light into short strokes laid side by side, and only the eye joins them into sky, water or foliage. Anyone browsing impressionist paintings for sale between 2,000 and 5,000 euro will mostly meet oil and acrylic work in which the brush stroke stays visible.

What counts is not the object but the mood of a moment. Warm and cool tones sit side by side, shadows are colored instead of gray, and outlines dissolve into shimmer. That suits gardens, riverbanks or street scenes in the morning. It works best if you first view pictures from close up and then step back slowly until the shimmer settles.

Oil or acrylic

The classic choice is oil on canvas, since the paint stays wet for long and tones can be mixed right in the picture. Acrylic on canvas dries faster and demands a decisive stroke, which often stresses the sketchlike quality.

In the room

Impressionist pictures gain from distance. Hang them where you can step back several paces, and choose soft, indirect light. Watching a picture on sunny and overcast days shows how much its mood shifts with the room light.
