Composition as scaffolding

Classical painting follows rules that have grown over centuries: balanced composition, handling of light and dark, glazes and a craft you can see in the result. Classical paintings for sale between 2,000 and 5,000 euro fit into older rooms as readily as modern ones.

A classical picture begins with structure: where does the horizon lie, where does the light lead, how much room does the main figure get? Portrait, still life and landscape follow tried patterns that are filled anew again and again. A close look at hands, fabrics and skies reveals how seriously a painter takes the craft.

Oil as the material of choice

Classical pictures mostly arise in oil on canvas or in oil paint more generally. It allows soft transitions and glasslike glazes that you otherwise know from museums.

Frame and hanging

A profile frame in wood or with gold leaf underlines the character. Hang classical pictures rather low, at eye level, and light them from above with warm light. A spot above a chest of drawers, a fireplace or a sofa suits it, where classical pictures have always hung.
