Pigment and egg yolk
Tempera is the old egg paint of European painting: matte, bright and of a clarity oil does not reach. Anyone looking at tempera paintings for sale finds pictures built from fine, layered strokes.
For classical egg tempera, pigment is bound with yolk. The paint dries in minutes, so painters work with many small strokes that layer into areas. The result glows cool and matte and does not yellow the way oil can over decades.

Fine, fast, planned
Because tempera hardly blends, gradients arise from hatching. The handwriting shows in the density of strokes. Details such as hair, fabric patterns or leaves gain a sharpness often used in surreal and symbolic painting.
Paths through the selection
