What wood does to paint
A wooden panel takes paint differently from canvas: it does not give way, the surface stays taut, and the grain can remain visible. Anyone who wants paintings on wood for sale is choosing a picture with weight and a firm stance.
Once primed, paint sits smooth and calm on wood instead of being swallowed by woven fabric. Fine brushwork comes easier, and oil can be built up in thin layers. Some painters let the grain show through on purpose, others seal it completely. Either choice gives the piece its own character.

Hanging and storing
A wooden support is heavier than a stretcher frame, so hooks and wall plugs matter. Look for battens on the back that keep the panel from warping. Wood moves with changing humidity, and a quiet spot on an interior wall keeps the picture stable. Oil paintings on wood show these traits especially clearly, and for photorealist works the smooth surface helps the detail.
Type of wood and primer
Painters work on birch, poplar, oak or on fiberboard. The ground is decisive, since it shields the wood from the oil and gives the paint something to grip. Ask in the description which wood and which primer were used, and whether the back is sealed.
