I have always been fascinated by the way the sea transforms light into hope. In Towards the Light, two traditional bisquines cross a horizon where the visible world slowly gives way to the invisible.
Rather than depicting a specific place, the painting explores an inner journey. The two bisquines seem less like fishing boats than silent travellers. They move without haste, carried by a light that appears to know the way long before they do. Light is not simply an element of the landscape — it is the destination itself.
It belongs to no religion, no doctrine, and yet everyone recognizes it instinctively. It is the cathedral we have all known since the beginning of humanity: the sky itself. Beneath this immense sky, the sea becomes a place of contemplation, where silence, hope, and wonder naturally converge.
Layered with the velvety texture of tempera, the painting balances rich blues with warm golden light, creating an atmosphere that is both peaceful and uplifting. It invites the viewer to pause, breathe, and remember that every voyage, whether across the sea or through life, is ultimately a journey towards the light.
I painted this work after realising that the sky has always felt like the only cathedral I truly belong to.
