A material with character

Charcoal comes from burnt twigs and is available in grades from crumbly soft to firmly pressed. Artists mix the types on one sheet: bold for shadows, hard for fine outlines. The appeal lies in a velvety black that no pencil can reach.

Drawing beside painting
On a wall of paintings, a charcoal drawing brings a quieter, more graphic note. A mat in a neutral color separates the sheets from their surroundings. When choosing, check which paper was used and whether a signature or seal sits in the corner. Fixative protects but never replaces glass.
Everyday care
Dust the glass, never the paper. Charcoal stays delicate even when fixed, so it does not belong in damp rooms. When moving, carry the sheet flat and covered with tissue.
