Black as a design tool
Graphic and typographic drawings work with flat shapes, clean outlines and sometimes lettering, and charcoal adds a smoky hardness to that. Illustrative charcoal drawings for sale turn up under charcoal as well as in the tier under 500 euro.
Charcoal covers large areas in one pass and can be cut back with an eraser to sharp edges. That suits poster-like effects: a figure as a silhouette, a word in black on white, patterns of stripes and dots. Unlike ink, the tone never gets completely smooth, it keeps a grainy warmth.

Rows, series, wall pieces
Graphic sheets work well in rows, say three identical frames side by side in a hallway. Matching mats tie different motifs together. When there is lettering in the picture, mind the reading direction: some pieces are made for one format and lose force if trimmed.
Signature and series
Graphic motifs are sometimes drawn as a series. Ask whether a sheet is one of a kind or part of a set, and whether it is signed. A drawing is always an original, a print after a drawing is not.
