Ink on paper instead of silver salts
Ink sinks into the paper instead of sitting on a film, which is what gives these pictures their velvety blacks. Anyone looking for ink photographs for sale will find pigment prints as well as prints finished by hand with India ink.
An ink print builds the image dot by dot from fine pigments. Transitions come out softer than in a classic darkroom print, and the paper can be cotton rag, rice paper or coated baryta. Some photographers go over the print by hand with ink, so no two sheets match completely.

Calm surfaces on the wall
Pigment ink looks matte and hardly reflects. Behind non-glare glass even a window at the side does little harm, dark tones stay velvety, and light areas keep fine detail right up to the paper edge. That makes such sheets good companions in rooms where the daylight keeps changing.
What the description should say
Look for the ink type and the paper. Pigment ink is considered more lightfast than dye ink, and a mat board keeps the sheet away from the glass. If you like texture, try abstract ink photographs; if you want color, look at color photographs in ink.
