A line that stays

A steel nib leaves lines that cannot be taken back: every stroke sits exactly where it was placed. You can find mixed media with pen and ink for sale here if you like that decisiveness joined to watercolor, collage or acrylic.

Ink sinks into the paper and dries as a dark, sharply bounded trace. With a nib the line turns thin or bold depending on pressure, and hatching builds shadow from dozens of fine strokes. In mixed media, artists lay pen work over watercolor clouds or paper scraps, so line and field push against each other. Pure drawings show the nib at its clearest.

Hands and budget

The nib suits many handwritings: graphic and illustrative, dreamlike and surreal, rhythmic and gestural, or packed with signs. The tiers under 500 euro and 500 to 1,000 euro hold plenty of work on paper. Paper pieces belong behind glass with an acid-free mat, because some inks fade in sunlight.

Paper and light

Nibs work well on smooth, sized paper because ink does not feather there. Rag and handmade papers are especially durable. Have a sheet framed with a mat, so the drawing has air and the glass never touches the surface.
