Movement in the stroke
Ink can shout or whisper, and in the gestural style it usually does both on one sheet. You can find expressive, gestural mixed media pen and ink for sale if you prefer movement to tidy detail.
Gestural work shows the path of the hand. The nib scratches, splatters and builds nests of lines in which you can read speed and pauses. When mixed media joins, color or water runs into the ink and dissolves edges. Sometimes layers overlap so heavily that they look like a weave of marks. Pure drawings show that motion in black and white.

Hanging with tension
Pictures with this much movement work best when their surroundings stay calm: a pale wall, a slim frame, few neighbors. Then they hold even large rooms. Find out about sheet size and paper, and about the price level, for example in works under 500 euro. Keeping them out of the sun extends the life of the ink.
Caring for the ink
Gestural ink pieces often have thick ink areas that took long to dry. Under glass on paper that is no issue. If you keep the sheet unframed, put tissue between layers and store it flat.
