Color that flickers
Pastel was the impressionists’ favorite material because it turns light into color without drying or darkening afterward. Impressionist pastel drawings for sale run from under 500 euro to 1,000 to 2,000 euro, in delicate as well as strong palettes.
On pastel sheets, skies, water and flowers arise from dots and strokes that only join into shapes at a distance. Pastel chalk and pastel supply dry, luminous colors for this. The paper often stays visible as a middle tone.

Hung softly, well protected
Pastel hangs best behind glass, with a wide mat and distance to the pane. Soft early morning sun is still fine, midday sun is not. Those looking for a sheet for a living room often choose frames in white or light wood.
Questions about the chalk
Ask about fixative, paper type and the tooth of the paper, since pastel holds differently. The description should state dimensions, signature and notes on framing. A detail photo reveals how dense the application is.
