Color over a dark ground
Pastel over a charcoal underlayer is an old studio solution: the charcoal sets form and shadow, and the pastel adds flickering touches of color on top. Impressionist pastel drawings with charcoal for sale reward buyers who like pictures that only knit together from a bit of distance.
The charcoal drawing underneath gives the pastel tones grip and depth. Rose, ochre or blue-green glow stronger sitting on gray, and the artist leaves some spots open so the charcoal shows through. The feel of sun on water or dust in the air comes from many small dabs of color side by side.

Dust, glass and distance
Pastel dust eventually drops, so the sheet belongs behind glass with a mat as a spacer. Hang it away from drafts and from heaters that run beneath the frame. A note on the paper, such as rough or velvet-coated, tells you a lot about how well the color layer will hold.
Small buying notes
With pastel over charcoal, the paper needs tooth, or it will not hold both layers. Ask about the back: an acid-free backing board protects the sheet from discoloration in the frame. A certificate or signature belongs in the listing.
