Pastel stays fresh for decades if it sits behind glass and does not hang in the sun. Ask whether the paper is acid-free and whether the artist fixed the sheet. If several sheets are in question, compare subjects under the same light. A beach looks different in the morning than in the evening, and the picture should suit the time of day when you will see it most.
