Velvet matte and glowing
Pastel has the purity of pigment and the directness of drawing: color that you bring to the sheet by hand. Pastel drawings for sale run from under 500 euro to 1,000 to 2,000 euro, in impressionism as well as in photorealism.
Pastel chalk is not mixed but layered on the paper. That keeps every color pure and creates a powdery depth that oil does not produce. Pastel is used in impressionist, gestural, graphic and photorealist sheets.

Protection for a delicate medium
Pastel belongs behind glass, with a spacer, away from sun and heating. A wide mat carries the look. Hang the sheet away from drafts and kitchens. In transit it stays flat, with an interleaf of tissue.
Questions before buying
Learn about paper, fixing and the kind of pastel. Soft chalk holds more pigment, hard sticks allow detail. Add dimensions, signature and notes on framing. Detail shots let you see how dense the application is.
