Broad gestures, deep color
Oil on canvas carries gestural painting best, because the paint stays wet for a long time and movements trail off softly. Expressive oil paintings on canvas between 500 and 1,000 euro for sale come in strong formats.
With knife and broad brush, layers of paint can be drawn over one another until dark tones shimmer through light ones. Oil holds every movement and gives it depth through its sheen. The result is a picture that looks different from different angles.

Lighting and position
Gestural oil paintings have relief. Raking light from one side brings it out, frontal light calms the surface. With larger pictures a picture light is worth considering. Direct sun, by contrast, should not hit the painting.
Thick layers need time
The thicker the application, the longer the drying. Ask about the date of creation, the varnish, and how the picture is transported. A precise note on dimensions and weight helps with hanging.
