White, matte and malleable
Plaster makes painting tangible: it can be troweled, scratched, sanded and tinted until the surface feels like stone or skin. Here you can find paintings with plaster for sale that work with relief and play of shadow.
Plaster soaks up water and sets quickly. The artist applies it in layers while it is creamy and shapes it with a spatula, a comb or a fingertip. Afterwards it can be glazed in color, so pigment gathers in the valleys while the ridges stay light.

Shadow as drawing
Plaster pictures change with the light. Side daylight traces edges and grooves, and in the evening spots in raking light pick out a relief that is barely noticeable by day. Hang the picture where the light moves.
Practical tips
Plaster is sensitive to breakage and dislikes damp. Pay attention to a sturdy support, weight and hanging system. As starting points use Abstract, acrylic on canvas and mixed-media.
