Hot wax, layer by layer
Wax as a painting medium smells of the beehive and glows like skin: warm, silky, faintly translucent. Here you can find paintings in wax for sale that work with layers, scratch marks and a velvety sheen.
In encaustic, wax is heated with pigment, brushed on and fused into the layer beneath with warmth. Light travels a little way in and returns softened, which explains the sense of depth. Artists can incise, scrape, embed paper or melt color back down.

Hanging and protecting
Wax dislikes heat. Above a radiator or in blazing sun is the wrong place, while a calm room with mild light is ideal. A soft, dry cloth can buff the surface gently, which softens the gloss.
Pointers for choosing
Check what the work was painted on, usually sturdy wood or hardboard. A rigid base prevents cracks. To explore further: Abstract or mixed-media. On format: wax pictures are often made in medium sizes, since every layer takes heat and time, although large panels exist too. Check the description for dimensions in centimeters and the weight of the panel.
