Ideas in the raw
The surreal sketch is a window into the making: here a hand tries out strange connections before committing. Surrealist sketches for sale start at under 500 euro, often in pencil.
On these sheets you see guide lines, repetitions and small notes in the margin. An eye sits where a hand should be, a chair has roots. Everything looks provisional and is convincing for exactly that reason: you watch the idea come into being.

Small formats, big imagination
Sketches fit on narrow stretches of wall, in niches or above desks. A mat with a wide border turns a small sheet into a picture. Several sketches on the same theme make a wall you like to walk along.
Details on the sheet
Ask about the paper, since sketch paper is often thin, and about the signature. A look at the edges shows whether the sheet was released from a pad. Photos in raking light reveal how forcefully the line was set.
