The detail as the main event
A sketch that looks photographed is usually a detail study: a hand, an eye or a glass surface captured with great accuracy. Photorealistic sketches for sale come in pencil, graphite, ink and charcoal, with sheets from under 500 euro up into the middle price tier.
The draftsperson takes a small section and extracts everything from it: pores, fine hairs, reflections. The rest of the sheet often stays blank or sketchy, which makes the carefully worked spot all the stronger. With pencil and graphite the finest gradations succeed.

Between study and picture
Such sheets hang well in small groups, say three studies of equal size side by side. The eye compares how a material behaves in different settings: skin, metal, fabric. A broad white mat leads the glance to the center of the drawing.
What to look out for
Ask about paper smoothness, technique and signature, and have detail shots sent that show the fine line work. With ink, a note on lightfastness is worth having, with charcoal the question about fixative.
