Limestone with veining
Marble takes light a few millimeters deep and returns it from within, which is why polished stone can look almost soft. Anyone shopping for marble sculptures for sale is buying weight, coolness and a surface that never quite feels warm to the touch.
Marble is recrystallized limestone. Its veins come from impurities and make each piece different. White marble lets some light in, while dark varieties look severe and deep. Polished, it mirrors; bush-hammered or pointed, it stays dull and grippy. The shift between smooth and rough is itself a mark of good carving.

Weight, acid, placement
Marble is heavy, so the load capacity of floor and furniture counts. Acids such as lemon or vinegar etch the polish dull, and candle soot and grease leave marks. Indoors, a soft dry cloth suffices. Whether stone, statue or abstract form, ask about the type, the origin of the stone and the finishing. Pieces where polish and roughness stand next to each other are especially striking, since the boundary shows how carefully the work was done.
