Why the paper prints along

In printmaking, paper is more than a support: it gives the print tone, structure and durability. Prints on paper are for sale starting under 500 euro, for example as linocut or comic motif.

Handmade paper, rag paper and sturdy intaglio paper take ink differently. Rough surfaces show embossing and grain, smooth ones keep lines sharp. The color of the paper, from white through cream to gray, becomes part of the picture. Anyone comparing several sheets quickly sees how strongly the same technique differs on different papers, and so finds a personal favorite.

Paper in the frame and on the wall

Paper responds to moisture and heat and therefore needs air. A mat keeps the sheet away from the glass, and acid-free materials protect against yellowing. Bathroom and kitchen are only partly suitable, hallway and living room very much so.

Checking the paper, recognizing the original

Ask about paper type, weight and size as well as number, signature and process. Waves or foxing are signs of poor storage. Giclée prints, such as those under giclée, are pigment prints and should be described clearly as such.
