The stroke as handwriting
Gestural watercolor makes the swing of the arm visible, with wide strokes, drops and strong fields of color. If you want expressive watercolors for sale, you will find sheets in the watercolor technique, among them works under 500 euro.
Water-based paint shows every movement: the fast pull with the flat brush, the wiping away with the hand, the flinging of drops. There is no going back, and that is the appeal. Traces become rhythm. Sometimes the appeal lies precisely in a drop having run where it was not planned.

Wall spot and light
Gestural watercolors need some distance so the movement shows as a whole. A spot at the end of a hallway or above a low piece of furniture suits them. Subdued light protects the pigments. Before buying, test how the sheet looks beside your furniture.
Recognizing quality
Forceful colors need stable papers. Ask whether the sheet is mounted or loose, and look at the back and edges.
