Chalk as a brush substitute

Thick sticks can be driven flat and cover large areas. Held narrow they give lines like an etching needle. The wax brakes and lets edges catch slightly, which gives the stroke character. From many pulls a fabric of color arises.

Support and format
Gestural oil pastel is found on paper and board as well as on canvas with a ground. Larger formats show the movement of the arm, smaller ones more the hand. The description should name the support so you can plan framing and location.
Protection and light
Under glass with spacing, the surface keeps its shape. Soft side light brings out the structure of the chalk. Direct sunlight and heating warmth make wax soft, so the picture should hang in a cool, bright room.
