Surface, weight, tension
Large color fields, a rhythm of brush pulls, a composition without a subject: abstract painting in oil asks for courage to leave things out. You can find abstract oil paintings from 1,000 to 2,000 euro for sale here, in formats that order walls.
In this price band abstract oils often show a sure balance between density and emptiness. A dark block on the left calls for a pale counterpart on the right, and a stripe needs room to breathe. Oil gives these decisions weight, because the paint stands rich and slightly glossy.

The room as counterpart
A large abstract painting answers to what stands around it. Above a long sofa it orders horizontally, in a stairwell it pulls vertically. Leave generous wall all around so the composition can unfold.
Fine print for collectors
Ask whether the work is waxed, varnished or unvarnished, since that changes the sheen. Watch for signature, date and title on the back as well as a certificate of authenticity. With larger originals that is useful documentation.
