Paper as light source
Impressionist watercolor seems made for light, water and weather: colors run into each other, and the paper stays bare at the brightest spots. Anyone who wants impressionist watercolors for sale often looks for lightness and a mood that hardly needs explaining.
In watercolor, the white of the sheet is the brightest light. Painters leave it out deliberately so clouds, wave crests or windowsills light up. In between, watercolors run wet into one another and form tones you could not mix in a dish.

Framing and placement
Watercolors need protection from sun and moisture. A bright room with indirect light, glass or UV-protective glazing and an acid-free mat keep the colors fresh. Even a small sheet can carry an entire wall in a hallway or bathroom.
Hints for choosing
Paper type and weight decide how fine the gradients become. Ask whether the sheet was stretched and mounted, because wavy sheets give it away at once. A signature low in the margin is common.
