Found things with meaning
Mixed media gives symbolism a latitude that pure paint hardly has: a glued-in sheet, a piece of thread, or a gold line can carry the second layer of meaning. Symbolist mixed-media paintings under 500 euro for sale are made for anyone who likes mystery in layers.
Sheet music, maps, or dried plants appear as signs in such work. They are painted over, partly uncovered, and tied together with lines. The picture reads like a map you have to interpret yourself. Some artists work with gold leaf, others only with pencil.

Step in close
Unlike smooth painting, these are worth a close look. Small details like script, seals, or traces of wax only show up at short range. A spot at eye level in a quiet room is ideal. If the picture hangs near a lamp, applied pieces cast tiny shadows.
Clarify the composition
Ask about the materials used and about the paper. Compact panels and sheets are common among originals under 500 euro. Delicate additions belong behind glass so nothing flakes off. A side view photo shows how thick the additions are.
