Mystery in layers
Oil on canvas is a calm ground for symbolist pictures: muted tones, soft shadows, a light that does not seem to come from anywhere. You find symbolist oil paintings on canvas for sale if you look for pictures you can read for a long time.
With oil paint dark tones can be laid so deep that you believe you can look into them. Painters work with glazes until a shadow looks colored rather than black. That gives signs and figures an aura that is hard to put into words.

Stillness in the room
Symbolist oil pictures suit quiet furniture, books and plants. They gain from soft light in the evening or from sun falling in from the side in the morning. A dark frame strengthens the depth.
Worth considering
Ask about varnish, size and support. Dark surfaces show dust and scratches more easily, so protection during transport makes sense. The description may readily give you the year of creation and the glazing technique.
