Softly painted riddles
Oil on canvas is the classic stage for surrealist motifs: soft transitions, deep shadows, a surface that looks almost smooth. You find surrealist oil paintings on canvas for sale if you look for exactness and mystery at once.
With oil paint the flowing transitions succeed that turn a sky into a body or a fabric into water. The canvas offers enough tooth for glazes to hold and is smooth enough for fine details to stay visible. That produces the typical, almost photographic impression.

Color and hanging
The surreal palette loves muted tones, blue, ochre, violet, but also sharp contrasts. Wall colors such as gray-blue or sand strengthen the mood. Hang the picture so it can be viewed from afar and from close by, because the details are worth it.
On buying
Ask about size, framing and varnish. In strong passages of color oil pastel may play a part, which changes the care. Information on drying time also helps if the picture is freshly painted.
