Glaze and depth
Oil on canvas is the classic medium for dream pictures, because thin glazes build up layer by layer until skin, cloud, and glass look convincing. A surrealist oil painting on canvas under 500 euro for sale brings home a small riddle with a lot of depth.
Translucent oil layers create transitions no other medium makes as soft. A sky can turn into a curtain without the change showing. The technique takes patience and dries slowly. Reflections in water or glass look especially believable in this technique.

Dark tones, calm light
Surreal oil paintings often use muted colors and one carefully placed point of light. Avoid hanging them against glaring backlight; a wall with gentle raking light lets the depths glow. Warm lamplight deepens the effect in the evening.
Longevity and care
Ask about varnish and drying time if an oil painting was only just finished. Dust is brushed off with a soft brush, never wiped with a damp cloth. Small, finely painted canvases are a common sight among originals under 500 euro. A note on the back with the year of creation helps with identification.
