What to read in the description
Watch for details on support, ground and varnish. Good descriptions also name the thickness of the board and the type of hanging system. Whether painted finely in a photorealist way or loosely in an impressionist way, oil on wood is best shown without glass but kept away from damp. Such works exist under 500 euro as well.
Aging is part of it
Oil paint on wood changes gently over the years. Varnish can darken, and fine hairline cracks are possible in thick layers, counting as normal aging on older panels. What matters is that the paint sits firmly on the ground and nothing flakes. A good condition note creates clarity.
