Black beneath the color
Painting with charcoal sounds like a contradiction, yet it works: the loose pigment is bound with medium, overlaid with acrylic or used as an underdrawing. Mixed media painting with charcoal is for sale here for anyone who wants color and blackness in tension.
Charcoal lays out a scaffold of quick strokes that fix composition and tonal values. Color builds over it, sometimes opaque, sometimes glazed so the black shows through. Some painters leave charcoal lines deliberately visible, others use them only as a foundation.

In the room
This mix feels strong and yet earthy. It goes with wood, concrete and raw linen, but also with bright white. A frame in a dark natural tone underlines the character, while a pale shadow-gap frame makes the picture more restrained. Anyone drawn to this pairing should look at sheets under different lighting too, since charcoal swallows light while acrylic throws it back. By day and in the evening, the same planes can look quite different.
To clarify
Ask about the support (paper, board or canvas), about fixing, and whether a varnish was applied. Without a protective layer charcoal stays vulnerable, and it is safer behind glass.
