Black with body
Charcoal is charred wood in stick form, and its black has a depth no pencil can match. Mixed media works with charcoal are for sale here for people who like smudge marks, contrast and grain.
Charcoal can be laid down into dense fields, rubbed with a finger and lifted again with an eraser. In mixed technique it meets acrylic, ink or collage, which frame the loose pigment and give it structure. Mixing with other materials makes charcoal more durable than you would expect, because a layer of acrylic or medium binds the dust. Still, avoid touching the surface and let frame and glass protect the work.

Where it fits
Charcoal pieces carry weight even when they look light. White walls and pale wood frames let the black stand. For a start, look at works under 500 euro; for line, at drawings; for photographic precision, at photorealism; and for color, at painting.
Fixing and framing
Charcoal clings only loosely to its ground. Ask whether the work has been fixed, and plan on framing behind glass with a mat so nothing rubs against the glass.
