Grades and tonal values
Pencil is the quietest drawing medium and the most exact: its scale runs from whisper-light to velvet black. Mixed-media works in pencil for sale offer sheets where graphite enters a conversation with paint, paper or collage.
Hard pencils give light, fine lines, soft pencils deep gray with a slight sheen. Combine both and you get tonal values from mist to shadow. In mixed techniques the pencil often sits beside watercolor or acrylic, where it adds details that brushes cannot reach.

A sensitive surface
Graphite smudges if left unprotected. That is why pencil work belongs behind glass, with a mat that keeps its distance. Fixative is sometimes used but can change the tone. Ask whether the sheet was fixed and which paper was chosen.
