Modeled and fired
Clay yields while it is damp and turns stone hard after firing: that switch shapes abstract clay sculptures right down to the surface. Abstract clay sculptures for sale come glazed, slip coated or left as raw terracotta.
Built up from coils or slabs, these forms must stay hollow inside so they do not crack in the kiln. Abstract pieces play with this hollowness: thin walls, openings, taut arches. In the firing the clay shrinks, which changes size and shade.

Glaze, slip, raw
A glaze makes the sculpture smooth and glossy, a slip velvety and matte, unglazed fired body feels warm and earthy. On a windowsill or a wooden shelf clay looks especially good. Related work can be found under clay.
Plan for fragility
Fired clay is hard but brittle. Plan a spot free of bumps, and ask for notes on frost if the piece is meant for outdoors. Small works start in the 500 to 1,000 euro band, with a sculptor’s handwriting and a signature on the base.
