Firing changes everything
Clay is the oldest material in sculpture, soft under the hand and lasting after firing. Clay sculptures for sale come glazed or raw, as vessel sculpture, figure or abstract form.
The clay is built up or modeled, dried and fired at high temperature. In the process it shrinks, hardens and takes on color: terracotta turns red brown, pale bodies stay creamy. Glazes melt on and bring gloss, slips lie matte and velvety.

Abstract and earthy
Abstract clay pieces often show traces of the hands: finger pressure, cuts, coils. Related materials such as loam are represented too. Small sculptures can be expected already in the 500 to 1,000 euro band.
Keep fragility in mind
Clay is hard but not indestructible. A fall can break handles, arms or tips. Plan a spot away from edges, and ask whether the piece is frost proof if it is meant for outdoors. Hollow spaces inside are normal and part of the technique.
