Picture as cipher
Symbolist painting speaks in signs, hints and moods. Symbolist oil paintings from 2,000 to 5,000 euro are for sale here, with pictures that ask questions instead of giving answers.
In Symbolism an object stands for more than it shows: a mirror for memory, a bird for freedom, a window for longing. Oil allows transitions in half-darkness, so the pictures hover. You read them like a poem.

Made for lingering
Such paintings need quiet places where you look at them often. A study, a bedroom, a library are suitable. Subdued light strengthens the mysterious mood. Dark tones especially look rich and deep in raking light.
To clarify before buying
Have the symbolism explained if the description mentions it. It is part of the work. Also look at dimensions, support, varnish, signature and certificate. With large dark pictures a precise photo of the surface can give certainty.
