Layers without a motif
Mixed media takes the severity out of abstract painting and gives it texture: paper, paint, wax and pencil share one surface. You can find abstract mixed-media paintings with pencil for sale here if you love depth and touch.
In abstract mixed technique, a change of material replaces the motif. A matte paper area borders a glossy swath of paint, and a net of graphite draws both together. Look long enough and you find scratches, edges and overlaps that only show in raking light.

Weight, depth, frame
The more material sits on top, the more depth and weight matter. Ask about the highest point of the relief so you can choose a shadow-box frame. For flat works, a mat with distance from the glass is enough.
Asking before you buy
Mixed materials age differently. Inquire about adhesives, wax and the fixing of the pencil lines, and about whether the piece belongs in a more protected spot. Then you decide with a clear idea of care and location.
