Why oil in particular
Photorealism in oil takes stamina, because each layer has to dry before the next one follows. If you want photorealistic oil paintings for sale, you will see motifs that reveal only in the details how much handwork went into them.
The slow drying allows transitions that are hard with fast-drying paints: skin, haze, metal. Fine brushes set the highlights last, often as a tiny dab of pure white. That gives the picture its sense of volume. Some painters work from a grid, others project a template and then paint it out freehand.

Support and format
Oil is painted on canvas, wood or board, and each support behaves differently. Wood stays smooth and sharp, canvas a little softer. Large formats call for distance, small ones reward close looking. In both cases the eye decides in the end how hard or soft the edges become.
Judging quality
Under a magnifier an original shows fine edges of paint and no printing dots. Ask for detail shots, and ask about varnish and signature.
